Breaking down food into smaller molecules. Two types:
Physical Digestion
- Breakdown into smaller pieces WITHOUT chemical change
- Increases surface area for enzyme action
- Examples:
- Chewing (mastication) by teeth
- Mixing with saliva

Chemical Digestion
- Breakdown of large insoluble molecules into small soluble ones
